One afternoon, while looking at homes in Lake Carroll, IL, we ran across a vacant waterfront lot. It was perfect. We decided building a new home would be best for us. In December of 2016 we moved into our new home at Lake Carroll. We couldn’t be more pleased. All our neighbors and everyone we have met have just been the most friendly and warm people. The list of amenities at Lake Carroll was also what helped make our decision an easy one. The beautiful lake, water activities, great golf course, aquatic center, trails and winter activities round out what we feel is Northwest Illinois' best kept secret!
There’s a lot going on at Lake Carroll, but the best moments happen on the water. Our community surrounds the largest private lake in Illinois, 636 acres bounded by 22 miles of scenic shoreline.
All that space means room to enjoy the water any way you want to. Like watersports like tubing, water skiing or jet ski riding? There’s ample room to make high-speed runs. Prefer more relaxed cruising, or fishing? There are 13 no-wake bays, each surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Midwest. Two marinas adjacent to main roads make it a breeze to get out on the lake, and you’ll also have access to a private beach perfect for swimming and sunning.
The best part? You choose how the Lake Carroll lifestyle fits into your life and financial plans. Once you own any Lake Carroll property you have full access to the lake, the golf course (NO GREENS FEES) and all the recreational facilities in our community.

Lake Carroll Amenities
In the 7 summers that I have had a second home at Lake Carroll, our family and friends have had more fun than I ever could have imagined. We knew life on the lake would be fun—we had grown up around a lake in our earlier years—but never expected to enjoy it as much as we have. The lake, which is the prime attraction of the Lake Carroll, IL community, is a great, very clean and deep lake which allows for all kinds of water sports for all ages. Whether it is swimming, boating, skiing, wake boarding, tubing or just hanging out in Swimmers Bay with your boat tied up to the many new lake friends that we have met and become close to, the lake offers it all. The lake is what attracted us initially but the extra benefits of all the four season activities—and of course, the great new friends we have made—have combined to make Lake Carroll an important part of our life.
Lake Carroll is fun and friendly, but there’s nothing quite like the opportunities we offer to the boater. There’s the lake itself, of course--636 acres of pristine water. There’s plenty of space for every watersport enthusiast to experience their favorite kind of recreation. Try tubing, water skiing, jet skiing or just opening the throttle up and relishing the fresh air.
Or take it slow, cruising the no-wake zones along the 22 miles of scenic shoreline. You can gaze at nature’s splendor at your leisure, watching the seasons change in relaxing quiet.
Then there’s the support for the boating lifestyle. There are two marinas, both adjacent to main roads. One of these is three acres in size and includes fuel, a concession, shower facility, beach and playground. There are also two full-service boat dealers right on the community’s doorstep.
If you were dreaming of the perfect golf course, you’d want features to challenge the accomplished player and delight the newcomer. You’d also want it to be scenic, with lovely terrain spread out to view from every tee and green. Off the links, there would be a supportive staff, helpful lessons, a driving range and a clubhouse with a well-stocked pro shop and delicious food and drink. We can not only offer that dream course, we can offer it to you without green or membership fees.
Lake Carroll’s 18 hole 6,477 yard course is set in picturesque rolling hills, a match for your skills and a delight for your eyes. You can bring your own cart or rent one of ours, and the friendly staff can help you with anything from choosing the right putter to organizing a golf outing to serving you a satisfying meal. And every Lake Carroll property owner is already a member, so there are no membership or greens fees.
We are so happy being out at Lake Carroll. The friends we've made (who happen to be from all over) have truly made it a wonderful experience. The outdoor activities (golfing, swimming, ATV riding, boating, fishing, hunting, skiing, tubing, biking, walking, camping, and outdoor fires) really make this a one of a kind family place to escape to. It truly is a hidden gem offering so much for so many. Come out and see this lake and experience the lifestyle and there is a very good chance you'll become hooked just like we did.
How about a thrilling ride in gorgeous terrain? A 15 mile trail system makes a circuit around Lake Carroll, IL, and it’s the perfect way to get out in scenic surroundings and have a barrel of fun. It’s easy to access the trail from points throughout the community. Zoom through secluded woodlands, spotting some of your animal neighbors as you pass. Then climb up to take in the beautiful vistas of the Northwest Illinois countryside from hilltops and ridges. And if you prefer to take it more slowly, you can hike the trail.
The trail is part of the four season fun every Lake Carroll property owner can experience. Snowmobiles are welcome, and our active Trail Club holds group rides and charity events throughout the year.
Ski Hill and other Winter Recreation
When we say Lake Carroll is a four season recreational community, we mean our property owners can play just as hard in the winter as they do the rest of the year. That’s why we have a ski hill perfect for skiing and snowboarding with natural and man-made jumps, ramps and embankments. Or choose our tube tow, soaring downhill before ascending to the summit to zip down again. If you need a break from all that outdoor fun, relax and enjoy the spectacular view from our warm, roomy and well-appointed lodge.
There’s as much fun to be had off the hill as on, with ice fishing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling on the lake or on 15 miles of ATV trail. At Lake Carroll, winter just means a different way of having fun.
For our family, Lake Carroll isn't just the lake. Between the golf course, the ATV trails, and everything else, there's never a shortage of fun in the sun. But it doesn't end when the weather changes to snow. Instead, that's when things heat up over at the ski hill and tube slide. No other resort community around has its own ski area. We really wanted a four season recreation experience and thanks to Plumtree, we got it. Who wants to spend a bunch of money on a place you can only use part of the year? We come out a dozen times a year in the winter, especially for winter break and those holiday weekends in January and February when school is closed. Our son learned to ski at Plumtree and so did several of his friends. When the terrain park rails are out and the jumps are built they'll spend all day outside having fun. Between the skiing, the tube slide, warming up at the fireplace, or relaxing in the Hideaway Lounge, there really is something for everyone at Plumtree. In fact, it's true what they say at ski club, there is no off-season at Lake Carroll!
You may want to stay close by while your dream home is built, or you may simply want to camp at a site where a vast, pristine lake and all the community’s recreational facilities are part of the experience. Either way, our spacious 113 acre camp ground has a home for you.
The 132 available sites allow anything from tent camping to dwelling in style in a full size RV. A host is onsite to help campers with their needs and all campsites have access to a shower house, dump station, playground and community pavilion. You’ll be camping just a short walk from the Aquatic Center and Ski Lodge, giving you the opportunity to use two pools, tennis and volleyball courts and a gym. Roughing it never felt so luxurious!
A plentiful and diverse fish population, easy access, over a dozen no-wake bays and an active fishing club that works every season to make the lake even better. All these things make Lake Carroll an angler’s paradise.
The lake contains fish for every skill level, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, yellow perch, bluegill, crappie, walleye, catfish, northern pike and muskie. The quiet bays will give you plenty of places to look for your new favorite fishing spot, whether from boat, dock or shore. And each season, our community volunteers will be restocking, creating reefs and passing on the love of the sport to young new anglers.
Come to Lake Carroll and cast a line out, and we’re sure you’ll be the one getting hooked.
Lake Carroll offers one of the best fishing lakes in Illinois. As a private lake we are very active in managing our fishery. Walleye, bass and crappie fishing is excellent. The fishing club operates the Lake Carroll hatchery, which will raise walleye fry for lake stocking. In 2017 the hatchery raised 1.2 million fry, which we stocked into the lake; in addition to this we annually purchase 4000 walleye that are stocked. The club is also very active in building and placing fish structures into the lake. Large mouth bass fishing is excellent but the hidden gem of the lake is the small mouth bass fishery.
Charming by itself, our golf course club house is the friendliest spot in a friendly community and offers beautiful views of the course from the dining room, bar, rear balcony and patio. And then there’s the food! The menu features choices for every palette, and a Friday fish fry and Sunday breakfast bar and brunch are a great way to add a satisfying meal to your weekend relaxation.
The club house has also long been the hub of social activity at Lake Carroll, a perfect spot to catch up with friends, hold club meetings or attend a special event like our annual visits from Santa. And if you’d like to create a special event of your own (including golf outings) the helpful staff is ready to assist you with the arrangements.
Every Lake Carroll property owner has access to two fabulous pools. The outdoor pool is nearly 5,000 square feet in area and features spray geysers, a waterside splash area for small children and a 50 foot corkscrew slide. Our indoor pool is naturally open year round, has handicap access and is designed with both fun and exercise in mind. Both pools have dedicated lap lanes and designated adult swim periods.
If you prefer exercise of the drier sort, this recreational are also incliudes tennis and volleyball courts, as well as a gym with an amazing picture window view of the Northwest Illinois countryside.
When we visit Grandma and Papa at the lake, we want to do everything, but there just isn’t enough time. We usually go to the Aquatic Center at least once during a visit. The pool is so much fun! The water slide, the diving board, the fountains, the basketball hoop. We can even get a hot dog there! We would like to stay all day, but they make us go home after about three hours. Oh, did we tell you, if it is cold you can use the indoor pool. We do that a lot in the winter.
No community nestled in the splendid pastoral countryside of Northwest Illinois would be complete without the opportunity for riding. Our secluded equestrian facility is located just minutes from any home in the community. Board your horse where fenced pastures allow them to roam, and trail access makes it easy to saddle up and experience what nature has to offer.
Prefer to have your steed right at home? A number of Lake Carroll properties are zoned for equestrian use, allowing you to enjoy the equestrian lifestyle with even more convenience.
Lake Carroll in Action
We’ll be glad to schedule a personal tour of Lake Carroll, but until you can visit in person, here’s a video that will give you a taste of the lifestyle in our private community.
My wife and I are relatively new to Lake Carroll. We quickly fell in love with the place. So much so that we sold our house in the suburbs and spend the entire summer at the lake. The environment is tranquil and relaxing while offering many activities to create as much excitement as you might want. The lake offers boating, fishing, paddle boarding, and more! And I love taking the trail with our ATV to "visit" the mini horses which I feed baby carrots to often.
